Rani jadi review Ð 3 Romanu Bašta pepeo Svaka priča je gotovo pesma u prozi Rani jadi su kratke priče svet viđen očima deteta” Danilo Kiš 1984. Kis is a writer of intanst obvious beauty He writes with an effortlessly dreamlike poetic style that is nonetheless grounded in the realities and objects of the world around him He plays no tricks and his voice is clear yet he does not explain or dictate to the reader meaning each new visitor to his stories will approach with new ideas and new images Above all Kis is a very natural writer one that seems spontaneous and unplanned yet complete in itself it is very hard to find influences or imitatorsEarly Sorrows with its lightly sarcastic yet telling subtitle is a very short piece of work that begs further exploration of Danilo Kis s novels Ostensibly a collection of short stories Early Sorrows treads the line between a gathering of individual stories and an autobiographical work that functions as a whole Most of the stories relate to the narrator s childhood although it flits freely and knowingly between first and third person but occasionally the figure of the returning adult appears as a searcher of memory Notable is the absent father who has been taken away by the Nazi s whose presence is confusing and whose influence is strong on the son left behind That awful sorrow is tempered by the main topic of the stories the remembrances of important visual moments in childhood It is the choices he makes in remembering which make Early Sorrows feel like a complete story rather than a randomly compiled collectionAndy Sam the boy whose childhood is relived in these pages remembers simple natural things in hazy half dreamed memories there is the day he lost a cow he was caring for and the adventurous excuses he dreams up while searching with his dog the memory of soldiers marching past his house of friendship and young love of hiding in the straw with a girl of his pet who also takes his turn as narrator which is left behind in one of the books saddest moments or of wetting the bed a brilliantly written story which begins in a dream until the narrator realises with capital letters that what he is doing in his dream is actually happening in his sleep In mixing dream with childhood memory in playing with the moments that children find sorrowful or important or joyful Kis creates a bright and wonderful tapestry of boyhood experienceThe subtitle is apt There is something childish about these stories There is something ephemeral in the way he presents sorrow It is rare for a writer to paint such a huge and varied spread of images with so few words It does like he says reuire a sensitive reader There are gaps to fill in And it s a beautiful experience to delve into these half revealed memories and imagine the world Andy Sam came from and how those experiences of sadness and loss are transformed into such lovely poetic fairytale like stories 8 Fetal
