I m a fan of Russ Edwards Econtalk podcast so I was eager to read this pleasant pamphlet when I noticed its republication Readers interested in a longer examination of the origins of the last financial crisis will be well served with Kathleen Day s Broken Bargain Bankers Bailouts and the Struggle to Tame Wall Street for the origins of the heads I win tails you lose and I still win system are long and involved An aside I was unaware of Mr Roberts indirect association with the Koch family Mercatus Center George Mason University which however discomforting does not diminish the uality of this workThis genre can easily leave a reader feeling angry and powerless The conseuences to the promoters of the South Seas Bubble in the early 1700s stand in stark contrast to the schemers behind the 2007 2009 financial crisis I suggest however that we focus instead on the opportunity rather than the distortion how can we profit from the omnipresent systemic distortions There are almost too many to choose from sadly Defense stocks military industrial complex Prison REITS privatized incarceration Processed foods and diabetes management stocks agricultural subsidies feeding into the obesity and diabetes loops Senior debt of largest US financials now guaranteed by the government and at a premium to treasuries Housing manufacturing stocks US government promotion of home ownership continues etc etc etcA final note I think it was around the time of the Long Term Capital Management crisis of 1998 that the Fed dramatically cut short term rates Word around the water cooler was that one of our senior managers had put on an interesting trade that netted him 7 million Story goes he convinced our firm a then major investment bank to allow him to short US T Bills and go long US 2 Year Treasury Bonds on margin levered 100 to 1 Every time the Fed has subseuently cut short rates I think of that trade the legion of wealthy investors becoming even wealthy at the grace of the federal government And what of those that aren t wealthy
