A Victorian taxidermist eccentric and charming old man on stoop with pipe named Walter Potter a man who so happened to look alarmingly like Albert Fish made tableaux of animals dressed up in human clothing and engaging in human pursuits such as weddings tea parties and cricket games This book showcases a sizable collection of his assemblages and gives some basic information regarding their construction and exhibition in Potter s little museum called Museum where one assumes he consumed zero human children If that information alone doesn t sell you on this book then nothing will truly It sold me of course but I m finding that the older I get the morbid a turn my interests take which I m sure has a pretty Psych 101 explanation so whatever I m not worried Look I m not saying I m like Norman Bates or anything but I do think we could manage a stimulating mutually enjoyable conversation if circumstances presented themselves For starters taxidermy seemsactually kinda awesome as far as hobbies goFirst I ll get the gripe out of the way the book format is too small and too suare shape not attitude to present the large constructions in all their landscape oriented 3 dimensional splendor The focus is on detailed close ups which is both neat to see and ultimately unsatisfying This coffee table book would have been better served being the size of an actual coffee table considering it appears that most of Potter s collection has been broken apart and distributed to various private collectors so your chances of seeing these things in real life some day are scant Sorta like this bookBut This is what we have and it has uite a few delightful images of some of the most intriguingly bizarre lovingly built pieces of fringe art you ll find this side of wackadoo The human tendency to anthropomorphize is taken to extremes all while exhibiting a craft an attention to detail that is disuietingly lively and creepy and I want one I want one Cue the StonesI also learned some strange facts It was customary for cat owners in those days before spaying and neutering was widely performed to keep one kitten from a litter and destroy the rest This is where he often got his poor kittehs from local farmers who would callously drown and then hand deliver them The same applied to surplus rabbits which don t even get me started on my scarred childhood memories regarding baby wabbits I m not saying but I m saying you know who hurts wittle aminamals Future serial killers that s who Just gonna throw that out there Toads and frogs are best skinned by turning them inside out through the mouth Welp thanks for that Rats play the lamest least point productive games of double six dominoes ever and I could totally take em Would someone please explain to them what the spinner is I call this reviewing style Lazy Saturday And I apologize for it Anyway cool book too small cute design the end
