The Weathering, Dawn of the Apocalypse characters ↠ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB Joseph McGinnis ´ 7 download read The Weathering, Dawn of the Apocalypse Blog and ideas start go viral and take life as people start to commit murders terrorist attacks and global destruction the way she wrote in her blog People can either do the evil they want to get away with or defend their lives from the evil of the world Crystal is caught in the middle of a world in complete anarchy as The Weathering hunts her down to punish her for her decision to leave them and tell their secretes Will The Weathering find her kill her and will she make it out of the complete destruction of all humanity. Years ago Crystal was part of a group called the Weathering bored rich kids who drive themselves and each other to greater and greater depths of depravity including killing and eating a man and covering it up Years later she s escaped them and decided to change her ways until she writes on her blog the secret which not only alerts the Weathering but seems to go viral causing people all over the world to start murdering people with wild abandon Disclaimer Full disclosure I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads programSecondary disclaimer This book is probably not for me When I signed up for the giveaway from the description I thought it might be on the edge but there were a few interesting elements and I took a chance But I m of a SF reader than a horror reader and even for horror this is particularly not my brand Thus the book might get a better review from somebody who enjoys say the movies Hostel and Saw in fact a decent way to describe the book might be Hostel meets a Zombie Apocalypse book even though there s technically no zombies the kind often dismissed by it s detractors as torture porn I m not one of those people who s into those sorts of storiesI actually don t really want to review the book at all especially because at first the book didn t arrive and the author was so kind when I wrote to inform him of this and had another sent Perhaps the book not arriving the first time was fate giving me a way out But I said I d give it a review and I will Honest reviews are the only way writers improveYou may have guessed from the above that this is not going to be a good review But it just wasn t a very pleasant read eitherIt s extremely pessimistic about human nature for one thing seeming to hold to the view that most of us would freely kill not just specific people who ve wronged us but almost randomly only if given the slightest feeling that we won t get caught Whether it s right or wrong it s not really a world I m interested in reading about If there s some kind of virus causing the behavior that s one thing but not as just happening all over while the author uses characters to pontificate about how degenerate we all are It s just an excuse to show scene after scene of murder and mass death all to build to a twist ending that makes no sense with how the book was writtenIt s not JUST the nihilism that s a problem here I can deal with that if everything else is good hell one of my favorite books is pretty nihilistic about humanity s place in the universe and I can enjoy dark zombie apocalypse tales or Lovecraftian stories where human nature is meaningless But in this case sweep aside the nihilism and it s just not good The book probably makes a good example of the dangers of self publishing because it seriously needed a good and occasionally harsh editor There were typos all over the place and contradictions throughout It s a bad sign when the subtitle on the cover of the book doesn t match the subtitle on the first page in one it s Dawn of the Apocalypse in another it s Dawn of the Armageddon I remember at one point characters are visiting what s at first described as a town where survivors congregated and that it looked like a prison Then somewhere in the next few pages it literally became a prison with guards and a prison yard and former criminals and everything The most egregious example is the ending The book is written from the omniscient point of view and freuently jumps around telling the internal thoughts and backgrounds of different characters sometimes going through everybody in the room in the space of a few paragraphs And although that s usually IMHO the sign of a weak writer you can do it and sometimes pull it off well But when your twist ending completely contradicts the backgrounds and feelings we ve been told about That s just embarrassing The twist might have worked if this was a movie and saw only what they did and said to each other It might have worked if we followed one character in a limited perspective and only knew what thoughts she saw maybe with well chosen fragments of other perspectives that mislead you without spoiling the secret Or they could have gone with an ending that was close and maybe even tragic that was consistent with what happened None of that s what happened instead they went with an ending that made the early parts of the book a lie not from a character or narrator but from the writer the Voice of God in his world But if the Voice of God lies to you about the beginning it can just as easily be lying about everything Maybe all of it s really just a delusion of a disturbed mental patient living in a world much like our own that s a particularly upbeat interpretation that I d be happy with In short it s as if the author had written 80% of the book having fun writing scenes of destruction without knowing how to finish it then got this idea and ran with it never bothering to backtrack and make the earlier parts fit The editing would have to go far beyond typos and contradictions and endings that don t make sense If all those were fixed at best it might move into an okay book But there were other examples of weak writing plenty of moments where characters spoke out loud their internal thoughts for no reason and in ways that were almost cringeworthy if some of these lines were delivered in a movie it d be mocked or change their minds on a dime for no reason seconds after making a decision Most importantly there was no narrative weight behind anything I never got the feeling that anything happened for any other reason than that s what the writer wanted to write Why did Crystal commit and totally enjoy the murder that starts the book Well she was rich and bored I guess I can go with that Pages later we re told not shown told that she left all that behind and now deeply regrets her actions Why No reason s really given so I guess she must have discovered Game of Thrones or something and with something finally good to watch on TV her need for cannibalistic murders went away She writes a blog post that goes viral and convinces people around the world to kill except it s the most uninspiring piece of writing ever it didn t even read as true given that within the context of the book it WAS true so I can t imagine anyone actually believing it was Why does it work Because the author says it does Why do two characters fall in love Because he says they do There s no real feeling that they should other than one character being repeatedly described as luscious Personally I was hoping the cop character would just decide to ditch the other and go find her own family and friends since once things started going to hell she had no reason to really stick around It s just a series of unfortunate events but probably not nearly as charming as the Lemony Snicket ones For a book to really carry you into the story even a story about an apocalypse you have to believe the events maybe given a few fantastical elements to get the ball rolling the characters the logical connection between them and I never do If you re going to make a fictional world and destroy it it helps if the world wasn t stillborn from the outset The book ends with End of Part One implying a Part Two is forthcoming not for me I m afraid Again part of this is my own tastes others might respond positively so I wish the author luck in finding an audience that suits him and hope these criticisms help him to improve and better satisfy that audience But it isn t me and I don t think it ever will be

I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveawaysThis review may contain spoilersI ve read a few apocalyptic style books now and a lot of them are fairly interesting in the way they deal with what happens in the new worldSome parts of this book made me think of a recent film I saw called The Purge but there were uite a lot of differences too At first during the course of the book I wasn t sure how just reading a blog entry could cause people to go crazy when horror films and the like wouldn t do that I won t say how it worked but by the end I had a much better understandingA world where everyone chooses to do evil is much scarier than a world where everyone becomes zombies If it can be blamed on a virus or illness it means that people don t have to look too closely at their own dark naturesI really liked the writing style in this book Most of the time with constantly changing POVs I get dizzy and confused This was less so and it was really interesting to see the way different people reacted to what was going on I did notice several errors in the writing thoughI wasn t that keen on Crystal s character but I did like Ceres She was an interesting well written character Plus she was a survivor as well as a hero and those are the types of characters I preferThe ending was good but I was a little disappointed by some of what happened Still I have to say I d definitely be interested in reading the next book following on from this one I could see a lot of the scenes taking place in my mind and the scenes of violence and mayhem were real enough to make me cringe and affect me on some levels
