The Angel Esmeralda Review Î 102 From one of the greatest writers of our time a collection of short stories written between 1979 and 2011; chronicling and foretelling three decades of American culture From one of the greatest writers of our time his first collection of short stories written between 1979 and 2011 chronicling and foretelling three decades of American life Set in Greece the Caribbean Manhattan a white collar prison and outer space these nine stories are a mesmerizing introduction to Don DeLillo’s iconic voice from the rich startling jazz infused Several years back a dear friend of mine and former fella a pack rat who practically asphyxiated his 3 bedroom house with all his scattered bits of fabric broken manneuins modified guitar pedals doodled upon pages of butcher paper random glass framed thrift store paintings wires screws stacked tupperware containers full of paints and pastels Melodicas and chord organs clever coffee mugs full of stale neon pink brush water records movies and books upon books upon books up and decided to ditch it all and move to Chicago after our romantic break In doing so he created an early Christmas of sorts for people like me who it was naturally assumed would help him pack Though I appreciated the 4 disc Dirty LP collection and the Directors Series boxed set missing the Gondry disk probably the most soul stirringmixingshaking object he forced upon me was a paperback copy of White Noise You just have to read this nerdI didn t resurface for a couple of days as I fell into DeLillo s somehow simultaneously fragmented and fluid universe It was pretty impactful at the time due in large part to its perfect timing to put it repetitiouslyI have since read a few books by DeLillo and should say that by few I really do mean few so I am no scholar on the subject and should be taken with a grain of salt as a result From my limited experience however I feel comfortable definitively stating that he is not for everyone That said The Angel Esmeralda or rather the stories in the collection which most spoke to me take second place to White Noise as my favorite experiences with DeLillo being someone who is predisposed to appreciate him A lot of that admiration for the man and his work is heavily personalThe first observation I made about DeLillo is that he is incredibly skilled at distilling the truth of the isolated individual out of the murky seas of wider culture Like finding patterns in the static DeLillo lays a gossamer veil perhaps a sheet of velum over the surface of things and then line draws the important parts in one unbroken seemingly endless stroke of the pen This simplification a curly of an ear here the violent thrusts of a beard there the infinite spiral of the iris does not actually serve to understate at all but rather draws one deeper into the minutia by making them mysteriously accessible The rhythm of this repetition the motion itself of reading DeLillo is almost sensual in its glossing over its deletions and inclusions reaching you deep within yourself to fill in the negative space with your own experiences He is a demanding author one horribly unsuited to rapid fire reading I won t break each one down piece by piece but I will say that the stories which most got to the me that is right now such as the introductory piece titled Creation and what could be considered a follow up of sorts the final story The Starveling addressed what I have come to see as very DeLillo ian themes of proximity vs intimacy vs isolation To be so close to a person so in tune with one another and yet worlds apart in the mind and heart as a result of redundancy ennui frustration stasis The old ball and chain concept DeLillo takes several different approaches in addressing this feeling and the resulting fascinations we find and obsessions we build with the new and strange as a response Between these two stories DeLillo enumerates and expands upon some very basic truths about the appeal of familiarity and how it is at odds with the desire for change In The Starveling in particular DeLillo goes straight for the TKO on me by describing a domestic situation where a romantic relationship has been formally discontinued but cohabitation has continued out of habit financial necessity and yes the ravenous desire for comfort and understanding A place where you are both free to psychoanalyze back and forth without fear of reprisal the moments of stillness unawkward silences the dripping of a faucet or humming of a window unit wistful sex shared meals both animated and silent longing in limbo confused anatomy troubles swept under the rug for the sake of normality for the sake of calm the occasional alcohol fueled outburst of tears and curses all disintegrating by next morning s light and known in advance to be forgiven Emotional purgatory A calm between two storms that of dissatisfaction on one end loneliness and floundering on the other The mutually decided upon delaying of fear The reassurance of one s selfhood that exists in the company of another a feeding tube of sorts for the heart Between these two stories and particularly in the latter DeLillo delivers the truth in milky white vignettes When at last our male protagonist is met with the possibility of engaging with a new and strange and therefore fascinating human being his awkwardness his utter failure at relating despite his desperate need and well meaning yet misguided attempts to is truly heartbreaking This is something we all fear at some point being outside of human connection Cutting the thread to our ties with the wider world via one person who knows us well who accepts us restricting of lively blood flow and cell regeneration though they may be can be uite terrifying This is how he grips me anyway I have gone on too long so I will try to wrap things up The arguably two brightest gems in the collection Human Moments in World War III and Hammer and Sickle would be a good place to start in deciding if this book and DeLillo himself have much to offer you personally as a reader In the first big uestions about humanity are addressed how we approach a world so chaotic so violent so frightening and maintain our sense of euilibrium What of it all do we shift our gaze most freuently to in order to know who and why we are and that there is just cause for our existence How to we interpret the multitudes of data so often horrific and still find peace of mind Do we just deliberately plug our ears to it These issues are approached from the birds eye view of a spacecraft orbiting an almost post apocalyptic Earth The latter story Hammer and Sickle set in a white collar minimum security prison poses similar uestions but through the lens of capitalism gone awry through the soul of a man attempting to understand his place in the world and that of his childrenfuture generations when money goods and thrills are the end all be all the corrupters of all souls the ultimate pollutants bent on smothering the planet in their toxic wake In the race for expensive things and glamorous lifestyles egged on by an eually greedy homogenizing media how do we even separate right from wrong any in all the noisy chaos Has the Western World itself become nothing but one big indiscernible mess of misplaced desires and nonexistent self awarenessI would go on and on and throw uotes at you and gush and gush all the live long day but I must go to work and watch some lower middle class folks get wasted and try melt away their long hard days through human contact I will be thinking about this collection the whole time and maybe I will have even to say later All the same I hope I m not being vague here read it L'attacco dei giganti: 1 mesmerizing introduction to Don DeLillo’s The Angel Esmeralda Review Î 102 Rhythms of his early work to the spare distilled monastic language of the later stories In “Creation” a couple at the end of a cruise somewhere in the West Indies can’t get off the island flights canceled unconfirmed reservations a dysfunctional economy In “Human Moments in World War III” two men orbiting the earth charged with gathering intelligence and reporting to Colorado Command hear the voices of American radio from a half century earlier In the title story Sisters Edgar and Grace nuns working the violent streets o You know how in high school or college English classes you unpack every single line of whatever text you re studying at the time The class looks deeply into the work for symbolism metaphor syntax diction and deeper meaning To be honest much as I can enjoy doing it I think a lot of that s bullshit Sometimes a spade is just a spade you know Sometimes the color of the wallpaper in the room wasn t the author subtly trying to send the reader a message about the hero s emotional stateWhy am I going into all of this Well DeLillo s stories feel like he wrote them with these sorts of classes in mind They re full of symbolism and deeper meanings all intended to show how clever he is Were I reading these with a class and taking the time to analyze them word by word I might be impressed However as pleasure reading they kind of suckedHere s the thing these stories were just so boring I wanted to like DeLillo actually I still do since I own two of his novels They were mostly the sort of thing where nothing really happens and what does happen doesn t make sense but probably because they were about something else altogether A couple of them had awesome premises but failed to focus on the cool parts For example one was set in Athens which was being beset by an endless stream of earthuakes It focused not on that but on a broken statue obviously a metaphor but for what I just don t care Yes I know much of this is my laziness but I have a day job y all and I don t want to do too much heavy lifting when I get homeThe characters lacked development I felt Again this just seemed to be much about his ideas and getting his literariness across Also they were repetitive In most of the stories there was a refrain that would repeat several times which is generally not my favorite literary techniue and didn t work for me hereI fully acknowledge that I didn t read these the way I think DeLillo intended them to be read but dammit I ll read however I want to Anyway for the scholarly types that want to study sentences in detail go right ahead this is for you I m sure these are marvelous and critically praised and whatever but I guess I m not smart enough to appreciate them Fine by meNarrationThe narrators match their style to the stories pretty perfectly Of course I didn t like the stories so I didn t care for most of the narration either For the most part they affect or always read with a monotonous tone These people don t give a fuck and they want the world to know it This plays perfectly into the scholarly too good for an interesting story line business It does not however make paying attention to the audiobook an easy task If you like this style then go for it but it s not for me
